Stinkfish – Short Story Excerpt

It had always been my life’s ambition to be overrated. But on that Tuesday morning, I realised that it was never going to happen. It was too late. I was too old. It was time to end it all. So, I climbed onto the stainless steel balcony rail on the seventeenth floor of the atrium, and I closed my eyes, and I got ready to jump. Three things went through my mind. One: The happiest moment of my childhood, which was getting a blue bike for my 7th birthday. Two: The closing minutes of the 1981 FA Cup Final Replay. Three: The fact that I had just successfully given up smoking.  Then, I remembered that I had a dentist’s appointment that afternoon. If you missed an appointment, they charged you anyway. So, I decided that I would delay killing myself, at least until after I’d had that filling fixed. I started to very slowly, and very carefully, climb down from the stainless steel balcony rail. But I lost my footing… and slipped.

So, there I was, falling through space, and suddenly, in my mind, I was back in 1991. I was watching an awards ceremony in Berlin. The one where I won the Oscar. Not a real Oscar, you understand. It’s a special kind of Oscar for people who can only write TV commercials. Like those special Olympic medals for swimmers with no legs. My boss, David Cribbins was excepting the award on my behalf, because I was actually in Chelmsford at the time shooting some vox pops for a new diabetic chocolate bar.

David was saying loads of really nice stuff about me. What a privilege it was to work with me. What a thoroughly nice guy he thought I was, and how much I really, really deserved the award blah blah blah. Suddenly, I felt really happy. Deliriously happy in fact. Then, I heard the voice of Ian Calvert. Ian Fucking Calvert. “You don’t deserve it you know,” says Ian Calvert, “You nicked that idea,” says Ian Calvert. And Ian Calvert was right. I had nicked the idea. But I still wanted to kill Ian Calvert. I really, really wanted to kill Ian Calvert.
